HOME COMFORT GUIDES

New Windows, but the House Is Still Cold: What to Check

Learn what to investigate when replacement windows do not resolve cold rooms, drafts or uncomfortable floors.

A window upgrade addresses one part of the house

Replacement windows can change one part of the building, while the original comfort complaint may involve other areas. Persistent discomfort does not by itself prove that the windows failed or that the house needs spray foam everywhere.

Describe what improved and what did not. A more precise complaint leads to a more useful assessment.

Separate a draft from a cold surface

Notice where you feel discomfort: next to the frame, across the floor, at an exterior corner or throughout the room. Record when it happens and whether the heating system is operating.

These observations are clues, not a diagnosis. Ask a professional to determine whether air movement, surface temperatures or heating delivery best explains the pattern.

Review the window work before adding another project

Keep the installation scope and warranty information available. If the concern is immediately around the new window, ask the installer to review the relevant details before another contractor covers or changes them.

Photograph visible concerns and avoid invasive investigation yourself. A clear record helps distinguish the window work from separate building issues.

Investigate adjoining spaces

Ask whether the attic, basement, crawl space or garage connection should be inspected. A room can have several boundaries, and replacing its windows leaves the other boundaries unchanged.

Identify inaccessible spaces and ask whether the assessment can proceed without opening finishes. If openings are recommended, request their location and purpose.

Consider the heating conversation

Explain whether all rooms are cold or only one, and whether door position changes the problem. Ask the assessor whether an HVAC specialist should check distribution or equipment operation.

Insulation and mechanical work have different scopes. Ask each provider to explain the evidence for their recommendation rather than accepting competing guesses.

Choose the next step from findings

Ask for a written summary that separates observed conditions from assumptions. Compare proposed repairs by the areas they address, their access needs and their completion checks.

Use the main inspection guide before requesting another price. The goal is to investigate the remaining complaint, not automatically repeat the last improvement.
