Why Can Two Insulation Quotes Have Very Different Prices?
Compare insulation quotes by scope, quantities, preparation and exclusions instead of relying on the total alone.

First check whether they price the same job
Two totals can differ because the contractors describe different work. One may include air sealing, access and repairs while another prices installation only. A price difference alone does not tell you which offer is better.
Put the scopes side by side before comparing cost per square foot or per inch.

Align areas and quantities
Confirm which surfaces are included and how the quantity was calculated. Ask whether openings, difficult corners and adjoining spaces are included or excluded.
A room’s floor area may not equal the area of walls or roof slopes being treated. Request enough detail to understand the measurement basis.

Compare specifications
Check the proposed product, installation areas, thickness or performance target and preparation. Ask each contractor to explain why the specification fits the inspected conditions.
If the bids propose different approaches, ask what problem each is intended to solve. Do not make them appear equivalent by looking only at a unit price.

Account for the surrounding work
Property protection, removal of existing materials, access openings, disposal and finish restoration may be substantial parts of a finished-home project. Mark every included and excluded item.
Ask who schedules other trades and whether the offer includes the complete handoff or only one stage.

Clarify assumptions and changes
Ask what conditions the price assumes and what could trigger additional charges. Request the process for approving changes, documenting quantities and handling work that cannot be completed as planned.
Compare payment milestones, timing and written warranty terms as part of the agreement. Ask questions about unclear terms before accepting.

Choose with a resolved checklist
Create a short comparison sheet: diagnosis, areas, quantities, product, preparation, access, repairs, cleanup and follow-up. Ask bidders to fill the gaps.
A lower price may be appropriate for a smaller scope, but make that choice deliberately. The most useful quote is one you understand and can check against the work delivered.
