How to Prepare an Occupied Home for Insulation Work
Plan belongings, access routes, property protection, occupancy and trade coordination before insulation work begins.

Start with a written preparation list
Ask your contractor for a project-specific checklist before moving furniture or making arrangements. Preparation differs between an attic visit, a garage ceiling project and work that opens an occupied room.
Confirm what you must do, what the crew provides and when each task must be complete.

Clear the agreed work and travel areas
Identify the route from parking or unloading to the work area. Discuss stairs, access hatches, vehicles, fragile belongings and items that cannot be moved easily.
Photograph the condition of relevant finishes and agree where equipment and materials may be placed. Keep access clear without moving items into another required route.

Agree on protection and cleanup
Ask which floors, furniture and adjoining spaces will be covered, and how dust or debris will be contained. Clarify whether the crew removes coverings and disposes of waste at the end.
Protection is part of the job scope. Do not assume a general promise to leave the house clean defines what is included.

Plan occupancy for the actual product
For spray polyurethane foam, obtain the manufacturer- and contractor-specific plan for isolation, ventilation and reoccupancy. EPA guidance emphasizes restricting access during application and following product-specific reentry guidance; a generic time is not a substitute for that plan.
Coordinate occupants, pets and other workers before scheduling. Ask who communicates when the relevant area may be used again.

Coordinate openings and finish repairs
If drywall will be opened, ask who performs the opening, debris removal and restoration. Allow for the sequence of repair, finishing and painting rather than assuming every stage ends on installation day.
Confirm who you should contact if the schedule changes and how additional work is approved.

Keep a handoff folder
Save the scope, product information, preparation instructions, contacts, approved changes and completion records in one place. Before the crew leaves, review what was completed and what another trade must still finish.
Clear coordination reduces misunderstandings. It also lets you compare the actual delivered scope with the estimate you approved.
